Interview with Krystle, an Egg Donor

We recently interviewed Krystle, an egg donor who started with us 8 years ago. She shared with us what her motivations to donate were, how her experience was, and how she feels today.

What drove your decision to donate?

I couldn’t imagine not being able to have children. When I think about how many women can’t have kids easily, it makes me really sad…especially since it’s a natural instinct for many women to want to be a mother someday. So, when I learned about egg donation and realized I could help others achieve their dream, I was all in!

As you were deliberating whether or not egg donation was for you, did you have any fears or concerns? How did you overcome them?

I was most scared about not being able to have children after donating. I already had one daughter prior to becoming an egg donor and had hopes to have more children after donating my eggs.

However, once I researched more and consulted with my egg donor coordinator, I realized that the risks of infertility occurring as a result of donating eggs were very small. That gave me the confidence to move forward.

I’m happy to report that after donating my eggs, I had a son this past May. =)

The best advice I can give to other aspiring donors is to empower themselves and research before deciding to become an egg donor. Know the risks and benefits, but also have the good eye to distinguish media hype and myths from facts. Be honest: how fun (or “unfun”) was the process? What did you hate the most and how did you deal with it?

Admittedly, having to drive to the clinic multiple times a week early in the morning wasn’t my favorite activity. While going through my second to last cycle, I even had to be at the clinic for blood work at 8am the day after my wedding.

But, I kept telling myself it was only for a short period of time, and that kept me motivated. Plus, the early appointments didn’t interfere much with my work life, so that was a big bonus.

What was the best thing about being an egg donor?

I truly found it to be very rewarding. I knew when I was 16 that on my 19th birthday, I wanted to apply to be an egg donor. I don’t regret it at all!!! During one of my cycles, on my retrieval day, I received a card from my recipient family. It was the most sweetest, genuine note I have ever had given to me. I bawled my eyes out, of course. But, my heart my was so full of joy. I knew I had made a good decision becoming a donor.

How are you feeling today, emotionally and physically, post egg donation?

I can honestly say I feel great!

Emotionally, knowing that I helped others, all I think about now is how happy they must be.

Physically, there is no difference than 8 years ago when I started this journey. If I could donate again, I would.

Do you have a message you’d like to share with other egg donors?

Donating isn’t for everyone. And that’s fine. It’s okay if you’re having second thoughts – just do the research to help you feel confident about your decision, whether it’s to move forward or not. I would really suggest talking to a past or present donor if you have the ability to.

And if you do have the heart to donate without any hesitation, embrace every moment and enjoy the experience!!!
