Are you considering an ID Option Donor? These are donors who have gone through additional counseling and have consented to have donor-conceived children contact them upon reaching the age of 18. Choosing an ID Option Donor versus a Non-ID Option Donor is a serious decision, and you may have questions about the implications of both. Below, we summarize some frequently asked questions.

What Information is shared in the ID Option program?

ID Option Donors agree to allow Fairfax EggBank to share contact information with the registered donor-conceived child, after they reach age 18. The information that is shared includes the ID Option Donor’s full name, date of birth, last known telephone number and address.

Donor-conceived children who are registered in the Fairfax EggBank ID Option program will be the ONLY individuals with the authority to request and access contact information upon reaching 18 years of age.

Recipients who choose an ID Option Donor will need to register the birth in the Fairfax EggBank ID option program for that process to be activated. If the registration has not been completed, no information will be released.

Will the ID Option Donor learn any information about me?

To protect recipient confidentiality, donors cannot access the names of donor-conceived children and their parents through Fairfax EggBank.

When does the birth need to be registered?

Once a donor-conceived child by an ID Option Donor is born, parents may choose if they want to register their child in the Fairfax EggBank ID Option program and can postpone that decision until the child reaches the age of 18.

Can Non-ID Option Donors become ID Option Donors?

When a recipient chooses a donor, it is important to make the best decision for their family. Our Non-ID Option donor program and ID Option donor program are distinct; If a Non-ID Option donors is selected, she will be available for the ID Option program, but the ID Option Donor may be used as either an ID Option Donor or as a Non-ID option egg donor.

What if I choose an ID Option Donor, but prefer that she be an Non-ID Option donor?

You must sign the ID Option Terms of Use even if your intent is to use the egg donor as an Non-ID Option donor. As long as you don’t register the birth with the Fairfax EggBank ID Option program, the information will not be available.

Can a donor change her mind about the program she chooses?

Once a donor chooses to become an ID Option Donor she will remain an ID Option Donor. She will not have the option to become a Non-ID Option donor after committing to the ID Option program. The recipient can, however, choose to use her donor as an Non-ID Option donor by NOT registering the birth with the Fairfax EggBank ID Option program.

Does an ID Option donor have any legal rights or obligations?

As with our Non-ID Option donors, ID Option Donors have no legal relationship, rights, or obligations to any donor-conceived children born using their donated eggs. Parents, donor-conceived children and donors understand that the ID Option program is not intended to create family relationships between the ID Option Donor and their donor-conceived children. It simply empowers the donor-conceived children with an opportunity to contact their donor should they decide to once they reach adulthood.
